For those who are interested in this sort of thing and who missed it the first time around, Five are repeating The Ads That Changed The World tonight at 10pm.
Ah yes, this programme again. I missed it the first time round, and I'll probably end up missing it this time round. =:o It'll probably not be as good as the Top 100 Ads programme from Channel 4 anyway... but then I would say that as that was produced by Tyne Tees. =;)
You have to admire Channel 5's budgeting for promotions though. Even the programme promotion is a repeat of the one used last time, and it was only one of their low-cost 'text' ads in the first place. =:D
It's worth a watch if, like me, you have a place in your heart for the likes of the Smash Martians, and like to be amused by the previous unsuccessful branding and advertising employed by well known companies. Levi's Action Slacks, anyone?
Worth more of a watch, though, is The Ads They Had To Ban, particularly for the surreal Benson and Hedges 'Iguana' ad from 1978. Now why wasn't *that* included in the C4 Top 100 Ads programme (which deserves a repeat)?
Wherever would we be without repeats of 'specialist' programmes (as the aforementioned was billed by Five)... :-)
Believe it or not, you can actually buy models of the Smash Martians here in Bradford. It's a rotten town to shop in as regards most things, but the NMPFT shop rocks. And like the V&A there's a rather good museum attached.
I have my own little Smash Martian-I bought him off ebay aeons ago for not too many pennies. Only problem is that he's missing his antennae, hence the relatively low price.
I'm with you on the NMPFT shop though. I'm in Bradford every year around the last week of August for Infest (http://www.infestuk.com) and always spend an age in the museum and the shop...it makes me feel like a kid in a sweet shop! :-)
The Funniest Ads programme was OK, but it focused too much on those Pot Noodle 'slag of all snacks' type ads. I don't find any of them particularly amusing, although I'll make an exception for the recent ad with the Mexican band singing 'oh yes oh yes oh YESSS!!!' etc. :-D
The Banned Ads programme warrants taping, though, particularly for some of the classic alcohol ads (George the Hofmeister bear, anyone?). Some good stuff on there and not at all shocking as the name suggests. It's more about the public's changing attitudes towards certain products and how they are presented in the media.
I could wax lyrical about old TV ads all day... :-)
Just to mention that the new Charley Live DVD is out on the 19th of April.
And guess who else will be shelling out for that? :-)
